How to Export Your ChatGPT Data (and What You Get)

Request a ChatGPT data export from settings or the Privacy Portal, then see what arrives, how long the link lasts, and what the ZIP cannot restore.

How to Export Your ChatGPT Data (and What You Get)

To get a copy of your ChatGPT data, open Settings > Data controls and under Export data select Export, then confirm. ChatGPT will send an email or text when the file is ready. That is the short version. The parts that trip people up are the waiting period, the download deadline, and what the export does not contain.

This guide follows OpenAI’s data export documentation and its separate page on transferring exported conversations, both checked November 5, 2026. Menu labels change between app versions, so use the option actually shown on your account.

First, know which of the two routes you need

OpenAI offers two ways to request a copy of your data, and they are not interchangeable.

The first is ChatGPT settings, which works from an eligible signed-in account. The second is the Privacy Portal, a separate site for privacy requests. The Privacy Portal is the route to use when you cannot sign in, or when you want to exercise a privacy right rather than simply download a file.

You can request a copy of eligible ChatGPT account data using available export or privacy-request options.

Before starting either route, make sure you can reach the email inbox or phone number attached to the account. OpenAI says you may need to verify that you own the account. That is a practical detail worth checking before you begin, not after you have been waiting several days for a file.

Check whether your account can export at all

This is the most common dead end, and it is worth ruling out first.

Self-service export from ChatGPT settings is available for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible ChatGPT Edu workspaces. It is not available while you are logged out. It is also not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces.

Self-service export is not available in these workspaces.

If you are in a managed workspace, OpenAI’s instruction is to contact the workspace owner about organization-managed data access instead of hunting for a button that will not appear. For ChatGPT Edu specifically, availability depends on your assigned role, workspace settings, and whether data residency is enabled. If you do not see an export option there, ask the workspace administrator.

So if a tutorial shows an Export button and your screen does not have one, the explanation is usually your account type — not a broken app or something you did wrong.

How to request the export on the web

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT in your browser, and confirm you are in the account whose data you want.
  2. Open your profile menu.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Data controls.
  5. Under Export data, select Export.
  6. On the confirmation screen, select Confirm export.

That is the whole request. Nothing is downloaded at this point. You have asked OpenAI to prepare a file, and the next step happens later by email or SMS.

How to request the export on iOS and Android

The mobile steps are slightly shorter, but they sometimes hand you back to the website.

On iOS: open the ChatGPT app and go to your account settings, select Data controls, then Export data, then Confirm export. If the app instead offers Open ChatGPT on web, choose it, sign in to the same account, and follow the web steps above.

On Android: open Settings from your profile menu, select Data controls, then Export Data, review the confirmation, and select Export Data. As on iOS, an Open ChatGPT on web option means you should finish in the browser while signed in to the same account.

The “same account” detail matters more than it looks. People who use Google, Apple, and email sign-in at different times can easily request an export from one account and then try to open the link from another.

Using the Privacy Portal instead

Use the Privacy Portal if you cannot sign in, or if your goal is a broader privacy request. The documented path is:

  1. Go to the Privacy Portal.
  2. Select Make a Privacy Request.
  3. Select I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
  4. Select Download my data, then follow the instructions.

This is also the route OpenAI points to in its troubleshooting guidance for people locked out of their accounts. If a password reset is the real problem, OpenAI links to its own password reset instructions rather than a third-party recovery service. Avoid any site that offers to “recover” your chats in exchange for your login details.

What arrives, and the two deadlines

Timing is where most confusion sits.

ChatGPT sends an email or SMS message when the export is ready. Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive.

So a same-day download is not the normal expectation. Check the inbox for the email address on the account — and check spam and promotions folders too. If the account uses only a phone number, check your SMS messages.

Then the second clock starts:

Open the message and select Download data export. The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it.

A day is a much shorter window than most people assume. If you request an export on a Friday and the email lands while you are away for the weekend, the link may already be expired when you read it. OpenAI’s advice for an expired link is simply to request a new export through ChatGPT settings or the Privacy Portal.

Two further conditions are easy to miss. Download the file while signed in to the same account that requested it, and if a recent link does not open on your phone, try opening the same link on a computer while signed in to that account.

What the export actually contains — and cannot do

OpenAI describes the download as a ZIP file containing your chat history and other relevant account data. Its guidance is to open the ZIP and check that the conversations you need are there.

The important limit is this:

Open the ZIP file and check that it contains the conversations you need. An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted.

Source: OpenAI, Exporting your ChatGPT history and data, checked November 5, 2026.

That one sentence changes what an export is for. It is a copy for your own records, not a backup you can restore into ChatGPT. If you deleted a conversation last month, exporting today will not bring it back. If you are trying to find a chat that vanished from your sidebar, it may have been archived rather than deleted — see How to Find Archived Chats in ChatGPT before assuming the data is gone.

Other documentation tells us a little more about the ZIP’s contents. OpenAI’s shared-links page says a personal-account data export includes shared conversation metadata in a file named shared_conversations.json, while noting that scheduled tasks and shared task links are not currently included. Its account-transfer page refers to conversations.json, and says larger exports may instead contain numbered conversation JSON files. Those are useful pointers, but the exact set of files depends on the account and features in use. Open your own ZIP rather than relying on a list from another site.

For what it is worth, an export is also how you can review settings you may have forgotten about: Custom Instructions are included in the download, so you can read them offline. Remember that Memory is a separate system with its own controls, and managing it is a different task from downloading a file.

Treat the downloaded file as sensitive

This is not a formality. An export concentrates a lot of personal material into one file.

Downloaded data can include sensitive account information. Keep your download link and exported files secure.

Practical consequences: do not leave the ZIP in a shared Downloads folder, do not email it to yourself on a work account, and do not upload it to a random “JSON viewer” website to see what is inside. If you only wanted to check one conversation, consider whether you need to keep the whole file afterward. Deleting the copy you no longer need is part of the task, not an afterthought.

If your real goal is to reduce what is stored rather than to keep a copy, an export is the wrong tool. See How to Delete ChatGPT History for clearing conversations, or How to Delete Your ChatGPT Account for the fuller process — both of which are situations where exporting first can be useful.

If you are moving into a managed workspace

OpenAI calls out one scenario that is easy to overlook. If you plan to move or merge a personal workspace into a Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace, request the export, download it, and check it before the personal workspace is removed.

After a personal workspace is removed, you may no longer be able to open an earlier export link or request another export from that workspace.

That combines badly with the 24-hour link window. If an organizational migration is coming, do this early rather than on the last day.

The general rule is to check the identity of the account before assuming a technical fault. Most “my export never came” reports come down to a different inbox than the one being watched.

New in late October 2026: moving conversations to another account

OpenAI added a documented way to reuse exported conversations in a different personal account, updated October 28, 2026. It is worth understanding because it is much narrower than the phrase “move my account” suggests.

ChatGPT does not support fully merging accounts or moving conversations from one account’s chat history into another account’s chat history.

What you can do is export from the original account, find conversations.json inside the extracted ZIP (or the numbered JSON files in a large export), sign in to the account you plan to keep, start a new conversation, and upload the file. ChatGPT can then use it as reference in that conversation.

The process does not merge accounts, recreate old chats as separate sidebar entries, restore your original chat list, or move subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files, or workspace access. OpenAI also suggests deciding which account you will keep and reviewing active Plus or Pro subscriptions across your accounts first, so you do not keep paying for one you no longer use. That connects to canceling a subscription if you find a duplicate plan.

If the JSON file is too large to upload, OpenAI suggests uploading numbered files separately, splitting the JSON into smaller files, or uploading only the conversations you actually need.

Exported files from a personal account and from an eligible ChatGPT Edu workspace can be used. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces cannot be exported through ChatGPT settings in the first place, so they are outside this workflow.

A short checklist before you start

  1. Confirm which account holds the conversations, and that you can open its email or SMS.
  2. Confirm the account type supports self-service export.
  3. Choose settings or the Privacy Portal based on whether you can sign in.
  4. Submit the request, then note the date — the file can take up to 7 days.
  5. When the message arrives, download within 24 hours while signed in to the same account.
  6. Open the ZIP, verify the conversations you need are present, and store it somewhere private.
  7. Delete the file when you no longer need it.

Questions beginners often ask

How long does a ChatGPT data export take?

Up to 7 days. OpenAI sends an email or SMS when the file is ready, and the download link then expires 24 hours after you receive the message.

Can an export bring back deleted chats?

No. OpenAI states directly that an export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted. Check whether the conversation was archived instead — see our archived-chats guide.

Can I export data from a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise account?

Not through ChatGPT settings. Self-service export is unavailable in those workspaces. Contact the workspace owner about organization-managed data access.

What if I cannot sign in to request the export?

Use the Privacy Portal, select Make a Privacy Request, then I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data. If the underlying problem is a password, use OpenAI’s own password reset instructions.

Can I move my chats to a new ChatGPT account?

Partly, and only as reference material. Since late October 2026 you can upload an exported conversations.json into a new conversation in another personal account. It does not recreate your chats, merge accounts, or carry over memories, settings, GPTs, files, or subscriptions.

Those are separate things. A shared link exposes one conversation to anyone who has the link; an export is a file only you download. But a personal-account export does include shared-conversation metadata, so both belong in the same privacy review.

Keep the copy under your control

An export is useful for records, for reviewing what an account holds, and as a step before a big change like deleting an account or moving to a managed workspace. It is not a restore button, not an account migration, and not a harmless file to leave lying around. Know which of those jobs you are trying to do before you request it.

If you are cleaning up an account more broadly, the order that usually makes sense is: export first, then delete individual history, review Memory and shared links, and only then consider deleting the account.
