How to Delete ChatGPT History on Desktop and Mobile
Learn how to delete ChatGPT history, clear all chats, and check saved memories and files. Understand what deletion changes before you confirm it.

To delete ChatGPT history, open the conversation’s more options menu, choose Delete, and confirm. To remove all conversations, open Settings → Data controls and find the option to delete all chats. Deletion cannot be undone, and removing a conversation does not automatically remove separate saved memories or copies of files in Library.
What deleting ChatGPT history actually changes
Chat history is the collection of conversations attached to your ChatGPT account or workspace. Deleting a chat removes it from your account view immediately. What happens behind that is slower:
OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless it was already de-identified and disassociated from your account or OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal obligations.

That timing matters if you are cleaning up something sensitive. A missing sidebar entry confirms a change in what you can see; it is not a receipt proving that every retained copy has disappeared instantly.
One more limit is worth knowing, because it catches people on work accounts:
You cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support. Authorized compliance tools may still access eligible workspace data under your organization’s retention policy.

That second sentence applies to managed workspaces. If you are deleting on a company account, deletion changes what you see. It does not necessarily change what your organisation’s compliance tools can retrieve.
Use deletion when you no longer need the conversation. Use archiving when you want a less crowded sidebar while keeping the conversation available. If you are unsure which you need, the guide to finding archived chats explains the reversible option first.
The instructions below were checked against official documentation on October 25, 2026. Menu labels and placement can differ across desktop, mobile, account types, and staged updates. Look for the action’s name and confirmation message instead of assuming that a control must sit in one exact corner.
How to delete ChatGPT history one conversation at a time
Deleting one conversation is the safest starting point because you can inspect what you are removing. A conversation can contain many messages, attachments, and useful answers. Check its contents before confirming, especially if several chats have similar automatically generated titles.
Delete a conversation on the web
- Open ChatGPT and check that you are signed in to the intended account and workspace.
- Open your chat history or sidebar.
- Find the conversation you want to remove. Use search if the title is not visible.
- Open that conversation’s more options menu, usually shown as three dots.
- Select Delete.
- Read the confirmation, then confirm deletion if the correct conversation is selected.
Do not choose Archive if your goal is removal. Archiving takes the conversation out of the usual sidebar but keeps it in the account. A chat disappearing from the sidebar can therefore mean either action; the menu choice you confirmed tells you which happened.
If there is a passage you need to keep, copy the necessary information into an appropriate private document before deletion. Remove information you do not need from that copy. Making a backup creates another place where the information exists, so choose storage you can manage later.
Delete a conversation on a phone or tablet
- Open the official ChatGPT app and open its conversation history.
- Find and inspect the intended chat.
- Open the chat’s more options menu. The way you reveal it can differ by app version.
- Choose Delete, review the confirmation, and confirm.
- Reopen history to check that the conversation is no longer listed.
These are action-based steps rather than a claim that every iPhone and Android version has identical gestures. If your app does not expose the action clearly, use the signed-in web interface. Avoid deleting a different chat simply because its menu is easier to reach.
Deleting an account conversation is different from clearing a phone notification, closing a tab, or uninstalling the app. Those device actions do not perform the account deletion described in OpenAI’s help article. Likewise, clearing browser history removes your browser’s visited-page list rather than the conversations stored in ChatGPT.
How to delete all ChatGPT chats without a mix-up
The bulk deletion control is in Settings → Data controls. OpenAI’s current documentation says the bulk actions apply to conversations, including those within projects, in the relevant account or workspace context. Do not treat a project folder as an automatic exemption from an account-wide action.
- Check your account email, sign-in method, and selected workspace.
- Identify conversations you still need and preserve necessary information appropriately.
- Open Settings and select Data controls.
- Find the option to Delete all chats.
- Read the scope and warning displayed on your account.
- Confirm only when the intended scope matches what you want removed.
- Review history and archived-chat controls afterward.
An Archive all chats option is not the same operation. It preserves conversations while clearing the usual sidebar view. If your actual goal is a tidy workspace for a new project, bulk archiving can be more suitable than an irreversible deletion.
Be especially careful when moving between personal and employer accounts. The account name and workspace selector help establish which history you are managing. Follow your organization’s retention requirements before deleting business records; a personal preference for a clean sidebar does not override a required recordkeeping process.
If the control fails, refresh and inspect the current state before trying again. Repeated clicks can make it harder to understand what completed. A connection problem is a reason to verify the result, not evidence that the chat has been permanently retained or successfully deleted.
Deletion, archive, memory, and training are different controls
Several settings sound like privacy controls but address different things. The following table separates the purpose of each action. None should be treated as a universal button that removes every type of data associated with an account.
| Control | Main purpose | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a chat | Remove a conversation | Removal of separate saved memories |
| Archive a chat | Hide it from the sidebar | Deletion of its content |
| Memory settings | Manage personalization | Deletion of original conversations |
| Model-improvement setting | Control eligible training use | Removal of existing chat history |
| Library file deletion | Remove separately saved files | Removal of originals elsewhere |
Two archive details surprise people.
Archived chats remain searchable.

Archiving moves a conversation out of the regular sidebar. It does not hide it from search, and it does not shorten its retention period. If your reason for archiving is “I do not want this to come up again,” archive is the wrong tool.
The second detail is stranger. OpenAI notes that archiving a chat used for scheduled-task results can cause that task to pause on a later run. A tidy-up in the sidebar can therefore stop a reminder you set weeks ago. If a scheduled task quietly stops working, check whether you archived its conversation before you conclude the feature broke.
Memory means information ChatGPT can use to personalize later answers. OpenAI’s current memory documentation explains that saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting the conversation where you mentioned a preference does not automatically delete a separate saved memory created from it.
Open Settings → Personalization → Memory to review the controls available to your account. Depending on your experience, you may see a memory summary, saved memories, or other management options. Remove the relevant remembered information as well as its original chat when you want both removed.
Turning memory off is also different from deletion. Past chats can remain in history, and turning personalization back on later can make remaining information relevant again. A request such as “do not mention this again” changes future behavior but does not necessarily remove the source.
The model-improvement setting addresses whether eligible conversations can be used to improve models. It does not act as a chat-history eraser. If you want to change both future data use and the content already visible in your account, review those controls as separate tasks.
Check files, connected apps, and other copies
OpenAI’s current deletion instructions distinguish a conversation from files saved separately in Library. Deleting the chat does not delete those separate Library files. Review Library and delete the relevant copies there if your goal includes removing them.
Connected apps introduce another boundary:
Deleting the chat removes the conversation and connected-app data retained within that conversation from your account, subject to standard retention and legal obligations.
Source: OpenAI, Deleting and archiving chats in ChatGPT, checked October 25, 2026.
Read that carefully. Deleting the chat removes what was copied into the conversation. It does not delete the original record in Google Drive, your email, or whatever system the app connects to. Disconnecting the app stops future access; it does not erase past conversations that already used that app’s data.
Think through where you personally copied or shared the content. A downloaded export, a screenshot, a local document, or text pasted into a message is a separate copy. Chat deletion cannot reach into another person’s files and erase material they already received.
Use this small inventory before a sensitive cleanup:
- The regular conversation and any archived conversations containing the information.
- Relevant memory entries or memory-summary information.
- Files saved in Library.
- Connected sources that still contain the original information.
- Copies you exported, downloaded, or shared outside ChatGPT.
This inventory is more useful than repeatedly asking the chatbot whether it has “forgotten everything.” An assistant’s conversational answer does not replace reviewing account controls and source locations. For broader upload decisions, use the beginner privacy guide.
If a deleted chat still appears or another chat is missing
A stale screen can show information that has changed elsewhere. Refresh the page or app, check the account and workspace, and inspect the conversation list again. If you manage several accounts, compare the signed-in address instead of relying on a familiar profile picture.
Search and archive are useful when a chat is missing but you did not intend to delete it. A collapsed sidebar or archived conversation does not mean the content has been permanently removed. Open Settings → Data controls → Archived chats and inspect the available management view.
If deletion was confirmed, do not expect support to restore the conversation. OpenAI explicitly says deleted chats are not recoverable. A prior copy you made yourself can preserve useful information, but it does not restore the original conversation and its account state.
If many conversations disappear unexpectedly, stop making changes while you establish the cause. Check the login method, workspace, and service status, then contact official support if the issue remains. Never send a password or full payment-card number to someone offering chat recovery.
For “how to delete history on ChatGPT” searches, the key distinction is account history versus device history. Deleting browser visits does not remove chats, and deleting chats does not clean a shared computer’s downloads folder. If you used another person’s device, sign out and handle local copies separately.
A five-minute cleanup exercise with a harmless chat
Practice the single-chat action before touching important conversations. Use invented content so you can learn the controls without risking a record you need. The point is to recognize scope and confirmation, not to prove how quickly server-side deletion finishes.
- Start an ordinary chat and ask for three names for a fictional neighborhood book club.
- Read the result and confirm there is nothing you need to keep.
- Locate that exact conversation in history.
- Open its more options menu and choose Delete.
- Read the confirmation and confirm once.
- Refresh history and check that the test conversation is no longer shown.
Now explain what happened in your own words: “I removed one account conversation. It is scheduled for deletion under OpenAI’s policy. I did not use this action to change memory, training settings, or separate Library files.” That explanation is a useful check on whether you understand the control.
Do not repeat the exercise by deleting all chats unless that is an intentional account decision. Learning where a destructive action lives is enough; you do not need to activate every control to understand it. The AI level test offers another way to practice recognizing data-handling boundaries without deleting real information.
Questions beginners often ask
Can I recover deleted ChatGPT history?
No. OpenAI says deleted conversations cannot be retrieved through the interface, APIs, or support. Check archive and the correct account first if you are unsure whether deletion actually happened.
Does deleting ChatGPT history delete saved memories?
Deleting a chat does not automatically delete a separate saved memory. Review Settings → Personalization → Memory and remove the relevant remembered information as well as the source conversation. See the ChatGPT Memory guide for step-by-step instructions. Controls vary by account and platform.
Does archive mean delete?
No. Archiving hides a conversation from the normal sidebar while preserving it in your account. You can manage archived chats through Data controls and unarchive them later.
Does deletion happen immediately everywhere?
The chat disappears from your account view immediately, while permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days under OpenAI’s stated policy. Exceptions can apply to disassociated information and security or legal retention. Separate files and copies elsewhere require their own review.
Should I use Temporary Chat next time?
Temporary Chat can be useful when you do not want an ordinary saved conversation, but it is not a promise of absolute confidentiality. Personalization and saving choices affect how the chat behaves. Read the Temporary Chat guide before relying on it for a particular purpose.
When to ask a person
Contact official support for persistent account-control problems, and ask your employer’s records or security contact before removing workplace material. If highly sensitive information was exposed, follow the relevant incident process instead of assuming that deleting the conversation resolves every consequence.
Keep learning in small steps
Learn the reversible alternative in archived chats explained, then compare it with Temporary Chat. Use one control at a time and check its scope before confirming.
Deleting every conversation is not the same as deleting the account. If that is what you actually want, account deletion is permanent and cancels web-billed subscriptions, but it does not cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription.
A final reminder
You can make a careful privacy decision without clearing your entire account at once.
