Is ChatGPT Safe? A Beginner Guide to Data and Privacy

Is ChatGPT safe? For a low-risk task such as rewriting a fictional invitation, it can be a reasonable tool when you check the output. It is not a confidential vault or a substitute for professional judgment: the risk changes with the information you enter, your account settings, and what you do with the answer.

Start with the information you plan to share. This table ranks common inputs by their potential consequences, rather than claiming that every item has the same likelihood of exposure.

Privacy guidance checked October 22, 2026. OpenAI changes features and policies, and controls can differ by account, workspace, country, or parental restrictions. The explanations below concern ordinary personal ChatGPT use unless a workplace account is explicitly mentioned.

Is ChatGPT safe for the task you have in mind?

Separate three questions before opening a chat: may I share this input, can I verify the output, and what happens if the result is wrong? A tool can be acceptable for rewriting a public notice and inappropriate for evaluating a private employee complaint. The difference is the task and its consequences, not the quality of the writing.

For low-risk practice, choose material that is already public or entirely fictional. Ask for three headings for a neighborhood event, a checklist for cleaning a room, or a plain-language explanation of a common term. These tasks let you inspect the response without handing over a sensitive document.

For decisions about treatment, legal rights, investments, employment, or physical safety, use generated text only to prepare questions for a qualified person. A fluent explanation can omit a crucial exception or invent a reference. A paid subscription does not turn the answer into professional advice.

Use this short decision check:

  1. Can I do the task without names, account numbers, or a complete document?
  2. Do I have permission to share every remaining detail?
  3. Can I verify the claims with a reliable source or responsible person?
  4. Could a plausible mistake hurt someone or cause a material loss?
  5. Would I be comfortable explaining this use to the person whose information appears?

If you cannot answer the permission question, pause. Replacing a name is useful, but a job title, location, date, and unusual incident can still identify someone together.

Does ChatGPT save your data? Four controls to separate

ChatGPT can save ordinary conversations, and different features can retain or use information for different purposes. A visible chat list, personalization, model improvement, and temporary sessions are separate controls. Changing one does not automatically change all the others.

ControlWhat it concernsWhat it does not establish
Chat historyAccess to saved conversationsWhether training use is enabled
MemoryInformation available for personalizationThat deleting a chat removes every memory
Temporary ChatA session with different history and data rulesImmediate deletion or absolute secrecy
Model improvementEligibility of new conversations for trainingDeletion of existing chats or memories

Chat history is your saved conversation list

An ordinary saved chat can remain available in your account after you close the browser. Returning to it is convenient, but visibility in the sidebar is not a complete description of data retention. A chat missing from the list may be archived, temporary, in another account, or unavailable for another reason.

Archiving is an organizational action. It does not serve as a privacy deletion request, and it does not change training eligibility on its own. If you are looking for a missing conversation, use our guide to finding ChatGPT archived chats before assuming it has disappeared permanently.

Deleting is a different action, with service-side retention rules and possible exceptions. Do not assume closing a tab, logging out, or clearing browser history deletes a conversation from the service. Follow the current product controls and our guide to deleting ChatGPT history.

Memory can exist separately from a chat

Memory concerns personalization across conversations. Depending on your account and available features, relevant context can include saved memories, past chats, custom instructions, files, or connected apps. Inspect the controls available in Settings, then Personalization, rather than assuming everyone has the same menu.

Saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting the original chat does not automatically delete a separate saved memory.

This distinction matters after an accidental disclosure. Deleting a conversation may leave a separate saved memory, and disabling Memory is not the same as deleting the source information. Removing a detail fully may require reviewing saved memories and the chats, files, or connected sources where it appeared.

A memory summary is not necessarily a complete inventory. An instruction such as “do not mention that again” should not be treated as proof of deletion. Use the actual management controls and review each relevant source of information.

Temporary Chat has limits and options

Temporary Chat is designed for conversations that stay out of normal history, do not create or update memories while temporary, and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. It is still an online service processing your input. It is not a reason to paste credentials or confidential records.

OpenAI may keep a copy of a temporary chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

The current guidance distinguishes Personalized and Unpersonalized temporary chats before the first message. A personalized session can use existing personalization, such as available memories or custom instructions; an unpersonalized session avoids those sources. Limited safety context can still apply in rare high-risk situations.

Choose the option before starting because you cannot change that personalization choice within the same temporary conversation. Saving a temporary chat converts it into a regular chat governed by account settings. Our Temporary Chat walkthrough covers the separate use case without treating it as guaranteed zero retention.

Training use is another setting

For a personal account, look in Settings, Data controls, and the control named Improve the model for everyone. Turning it off affects use of new conversations for model improvement. It does not remove the conversations from your account.

Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete or hide saved chats.

OpenAI’s checked guidance says new conversations are not used to train its models when this setting is off, although they may still appear in history. For signed-in users the choice applies across web and mobile; a signed-out choice is stored in that browser. Check the account you actually use rather than assuming a browser change updated another account.

There is a feedback exception worth noticing: sending thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may allow the entire associated conversation to be used for training even after opting out. Review the feedback notice before submitting a sensitive conversation. Workplace settings may also override personal choices.

A practical privacy setup before your next conversation

Start with an empty or fictional example while reviewing settings. You do not need to upload a private file to discover whether the service can rewrite a sentence. Limiting the initial input is often simpler than trying to reverse a disclosure afterward.

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that you are using the intended personal or workplace account.
  2. Review Data controls and choose your model-improvement preference.
  3. Review Personalization, including Memory and custom instructions where available.
  4. Check connected apps, files, and other sources you previously allowed.
  5. Choose ordinary or Temporary Chat for the task, with the appropriate personalization option.
  6. Remove unnecessary personal details before sending anything.

Do not interpret a missing control as evidence that your data is automatically protected. Managed accounts and regional versions may offer different options. Consult the current help page or your administrator when the interface does not match these steps.

For work, follow the employer’s approved tools and document-handling rules. OpenAI’s guidance distinguishes business, enterprise, education, and healthcare offerings from personal use, with no model training by default for those workspace services. That does not establish permission to share a particular client record or remove contractual and regulatory obligations.

Keep your account secure as well. Use a unique password where applicable, protect the email account used for sign-in, and review available account-security options. Privacy controls cannot prevent someone with access to your signed-in device from reading an open conversation.

Remove identifying details without destroying the task

A useful prompt usually needs the structure of a problem rather than the real identities involved. Ask which details change the required output. For an appointment reminder, the tone and deadline matter; a patient’s full name and medical record number usually do not.

Consider a fictional receptionist drafting a reminder. Instead of pasting a live appointment list, write: “Draft a neutral reminder for [customer] about [appointment date]. Ask them to call [office number] if they need to reschedule.” Fill those placeholders in an approved system after reviewing the draft.

Redaction needs more than changing a name. Check for:

  • Email signatures, phone numbers, addresses, and account identifiers.
  • Rare job titles or incidents that identify someone indirectly.
  • Comments, tracked changes, hidden sheets, or extra document pages.
  • Images containing ID cards, location details, or private messages.
  • File names and headers that reveal a customer or project.

A screenshot can contain more information than the sentence you intended to discuss. Copy a short, cleaned passage when that is permitted, or describe the issue in your own words. If you cannot safely separate the useful material from the private context, use another workflow.

Never replace real credentials with slightly modified versions. A fictional example should be completely unrelated to a working secret. For software problems, report the error message and general setup while removing tokens, connection strings, and private URLs.

A conversation can be exposed by an action you take after generating the answer. Check sharing options before sending a link, and inspect what the recipient can access. Copying a reviewed paragraph may be more appropriate than sharing a whole conversation with earlier private messages.

Treat a shared conversation link as material you are intentionally disclosing. Do not rely on the recipient being unlikely to open it or on deleting the message from your own email later. Once someone receives information, you cannot ensure they have not copied it. For the exact list of what a link exposes and how to remove one, see ChatGPT Shared Links: What Others See and How to Delete.

Connected services add another boundary. A third-party action may send information to a separate provider whose retention and privacy rules apply. The Temporary Chat guidance explicitly warns that a recipient may keep data longer than the temporary session’s retention period.

Use these questions before enabling a connection:

QuestionWhat to inspect
Which service receives information?Provider identity and privacy terms
What access is requested?Files, messages, contacts, or workspace scope
Is the connection necessary?A smaller manual input may suffice
What remains after disconnecting?Prior chats and transferred information
Is this permitted at work?Employer approval and data classification

Disconnecting an app prevents future access through that connection; it does not necessarily erase information already included in conversations or sent elsewhere. Review both the source and the destination when removing sensitive material.

A browser extension also has its own permissions. Do not install an extension simply because a search result calls it an official assistant. For an initial text task, the official website avoids adding another service to evaluate.

What to do if you already shared something sensitive

Stop adding details and identify what was exposed. The response depends on the data: a leaked password requires different action from a fictional worksheet mistakenly saved in history. Do not paste the same sensitive information into another chat while asking how to remove it.

For an exposed password, recovery code, or API key, use the provider’s official process to replace or revoke it promptly. Deleting a chat cannot make a usable credential safe again. Check relevant account activity and contact the account owner or security team when appropriate.

For personal or confidential records:

  1. Note the service, account, conversation, and approximate time without duplicating the sensitive contents.
  2. Use the appropriate chat-deletion controls.
  3. Review separate memories and source files or connected apps.
  4. Check whether you created a shared link or sent information to another service.
  5. Follow your employer’s incident process if work data is involved.
  6. Contact official support or the responsible organization for remaining questions.

Do not promise another person that all copies are gone because a sidebar item disappeared. Service-side retention, recipients, and organizational obligations require separate consideration. A privacy incident may need a responsible person to assess notification or other duties.

For a minor editing task that contained only your own non-sensitive text, the proportionate response may simply be reviewing settings and removing the conversation. Avoid treating every ordinary prompt as an emergency; focus on the possible harm and the actions that reduce it.

Try a five-minute privacy rehearsal

Practice with this fictional request: “Draft a polite appointment reminder for [customer] about [date]. Do not add an address, payment link, or medical detail.” Keep the bracketed placeholders and do not insert actual customer information.

First, identify what the task needs: a reminder, a neutral tone, and a request to contact the office if plans change. Then inspect the output for invented links, names, cancellation fees, or promises. A safer input still needs an accuracy check.

Next, open the account’s Data controls and Personalization menus. Find the relevant settings without changing anything you do not understand. Record your preferences in a private note that does not contain passwords.

Finally, decide whether you would save the conversation or use a temporary session next time. Explain the decision in one sentence: “I only need a reusable template, so I will keep the example fictional.” Completing that reasoning is more useful than memorizing a list of buttons.

Questions beginners often ask

Is ChatGPT safe if I turn off training?

Turning off model improvement reduces a particular use of new conversations, but it does not delete history or make sensitive input appropriate. Memory, retention, feedback, account access, and third-party transfers still need attention. Use the smallest permitted input.

Does ChatGPT save your data in Temporary Chat?

OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Temporary conversations have different history, memory, and training rules while they remain temporary. Personalized temporary sessions may still use existing personalization, so check the option before sending a message.

Can other users normally browse my private chats?

A private conversation is not a public directory entry, but that is not a confidentiality guarantee. Shared links, account access, connected services, and workspace rules can change who receives information. Never use an ordinary chat as storage for secrets.

Is it safe to upload a medical document?

An ordinary personal chat is not the place to experiment with an identifiable medical record. Ask a general question without the document, or use a process approved by the healthcare organization. Get diagnosis and treatment decisions from a qualified clinician.

Is ChatGPT safe for a child’s homework?

An adult should check the product’s current age rules, the school’s policy, and the task itself before use. Avoid entering a child’s identifying information or treating generated answers as reliable teaching material without review. For distress or safety concerns, involve a trusted adult and qualified help.

When to ask a person

Ask an administrator before sharing workplace documents, a clinician before acting on medical advice, and a qualified legal or financial professional before making consequential decisions. If information was exposed, the responsible organization can assess steps that a chat response cannot determine.

Keep learning in small steps

Review the specific control you need rather than changing everything at once: Temporary Chat, history deletion, and archived chats cover different tasks. The AI Level Test can help identify another skill to practice.

A final reminder

A useful safety habit is to share less, check the answer, and keep the final decision with a person.
