How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription (Web, Apple, Google Play)

Cancel ChatGPT where you bought it: web billing, Apple, or Google Play. The 24-hour rule, refunds, and what to do if you cannot sign in.

How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription (Web, Apple, Google Play)

Cancel your ChatGPT subscription where you bought it: in ChatGPT billing settings for a web purchase, Apple Subscriptions for an Apple purchase, or Google Play Subscriptions for a Google Play purchase. Uninstalling the app does not cancel recurring billing. OpenAI recommends canceling at least 24 hours before your next billing date; cancellation ordinarily leaves access active until the paid period ends.

Three statements from OpenAI’s own page are worth keeping in view, because each one contradicts an assumption people make:

Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your subscription. If you only want to stop future charges, you do not need to delete your ChatGPT account.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next subscription period.

Canceling stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund previous charges.

First identify who bills your ChatGPT subscription

The device you use today does not necessarily identify the seller. You can buy a subscription on an iPhone and later use it on a laptop, or subscribe on the website and mainly use Android. The original purchase route determines where you manage renewal.

Find the receipt or subscription record and identify whether it came from OpenAI, Apple, or Google Play. Also check the ChatGPT account and any store account involved. A receipt email and a ChatGPT sign-in email can differ, so use them as clues rather than assuming they must match exactly.

Business workspaceOwner billing controlsWorkspace owner account

This guide focuses on personal ChatGPT subscriptions. Business workspace owners have separate billing controls, while Enterprise and Edu arrangements need the organization’s process. Canceling your personal subscription does not cancel an employer’s contract or a separately billed API account.

The steps were checked against OpenAI’s cancellation instructions on November 3, 2026. Menus can change, so use the current billing action shown on your account. The cancellation article is a more direct source for this task than a general plan overview with older navigation labels.

How do I cancel my ChatGPT subscription on the web?

For a subscription purchased directly through the ChatGPT website, the current documented route is Settings > Billing > Cancel plan. Make sure you are in the subscribed account before following it. Being signed in successfully does not prove that you opened the account attached to the charge.

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Check the account email and sign-in method.
  3. Open the account menu and select Settings.
  4. Select Billing.
  5. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
  6. Complete the cancellation confirmation.
  7. Review the resulting subscription status and access-end date.

If billing controls are missing on chatgpt.com, sign in to the same ChatGPT account in a different browser, then try opening your billing settings again. A missing Billing option usually means you are in the wrong account or the subscription was purchased through a mobile store.

Read the final screen rather than stopping after the first Cancel button. Some billing flows require a confirmation step. A confirmation or an end date is better evidence that renewal has stopped than simply closing the settings window.

If the expected option is missing, check whether you purchased through a mobile store. A store-billed subscription is managed in the store even when you use ChatGPT on the web. Also inspect the selected personal or business workspace so you do not confuse workspace billing with your personal plan.

Do not enter payment details into an unofficial “cancel ChatGPT” service found in search results. Cancellation should happen through the official account or purchase platform. You do not need to give a third party your password to stop renewal.

How to cancel ChatGPT Plus through Apple

Use Apple’s subscription controls if the purchase was billed through Apple. The relevant account is the Apple account used for that purchase, which may differ from the email you normally use in ChatGPT. Check the Apple receipt when you have more than one account in the household.

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name to open the Apple account settings.
  3. Open Subscriptions.
  4. Select ChatGPT.
  5. Choose Cancel Subscription and confirm.
  6. Review the displayed expiration or cancellation status.

If there is no cancel button and an expiration message is already shown, the subscription may already be canceled. Read the status carefully before trying to purchase or change anything. An active paid period can remain usable after renewal has been stopped.

If ChatGPT is absent, check the purchasing Apple account and receipt rather than assuming the charge must have come from the website. A family member’s device can be signed into a different store account. Never cancel another person’s subscription simply because you can see it on a shared device.

Deleting the ChatGPT app is not a cancellation step. OpenAI also warns that deleting a ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple-managed subscription. Cancel through Apple before account deletion and verify the store’s final status.

How to cancel through Google Play

Use Google Play’s subscription controls when the purchase was made through Google Play. A phone can have several Google accounts, and the currently selected Play account may not be the one that bought ChatGPT. Switch deliberately to the purchase account shown on the receipt.

Through the Google Play Store app

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Open Subscriptions.
  3. Select ChatGPT.
  4. Select Cancel subscription.
  5. Follow the instructions to confirm.

Through the Google Play website

  1. Open your Google Play subscriptions.
  2. Sign in with the Google account used to purchase the subscription.
  3. Next to ChatGPT, select Manage.
  4. Select Cancel subscription.
  5. If prompted, select a reason, then select Continue.

The website option is useful when the phone interface is unavailable or when you are canceling from a computer. The important point is the billing identity, not whether you perform the action on a phone or computer.

Uninstalling the Android app does not cancel the subscription. Reinstalling it also does not necessarily change the billing state. Inspect the actual subscription record before drawing a conclusion from what apps are installed.

If you cannot find the subscription, compare the receipt, the Google account, and the purchase platform. Avoid starting another subscription while investigating a missing entitlement. A second purchase can create a second billing issue instead of fixing the first.

If you have a Business workspace

Self-service ChatGPT Business cancels through a different path:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open the account menu and select Workspace settings.
  3. Select Billing.
  4. Select Manage plan.
  5. Select Cancel subscription.

If you do not have access to workspace billing settings, ask the workspace owner. If you are signed in as an owner and Billing shows only a payment or reactivation screen instead of Manage plan, contact OpenAI Support from the owner account. Give the workspace name or ID and ask to stop future renewals.

One warning applies specifically to businesses, and it is easy to miss:

deactivating that workspace—including after its subscription ends—may affect your ability to access or manage Ads Manager. Losing access does not necessarily pause your campaigns or stop advertising charges.

Source: OpenAI, Canceling your ChatGPT subscription, checked November 3, 2026.

In plain terms: closing the workspace can cut you off from ad controls while the ads keep spending. Pause any campaigns you do not want to continue first, and confirm that someone still has access to the Ads account before deactivating anything.

What happens after you cancel?

Cancellation ordinarily stops the next renewal while leaving access available through the period already paid for. Your account can therefore still show paid features immediately after a successful cancellation. Continued access alone is not evidence that cancellation failed.

OpenAI recommends canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Do not plan to cancel at the last minute and assume timing will always work in your favor. Store processing, dates, and the displayed terms need to be checked on the relevant account.

Record the confirmation date and the displayed access-end date in a private note. Keep a confirmation email or screenshot if useful, without including unnecessary account or payment details. That record helps when comparing a later charge with the cancellation you completed.

Cancellation does not by itself delete your ChatGPT conversations. If you also want to remove history, handle that as a separate, deliberate action using the history deletion guide. You do not need to destroy useful chats to stop a recurring payment.

Likewise, account deletion and subscription cancellation serve different purposes. Removing an account can have irreversible consequences for data and access. If the only goal is ending renewal, begin with the appropriate billing control.

Cancellation, refund, downgrade, and account deletion

These actions are often mixed together in searches for how to cancel ChatGPT Plus. Each has a different outcome. Read the confirmation language so you know which action you are taking.

ActionMain resultWhat to verify
Cancel renewalStop a future recurring paymentFinal status and end date
Request a refundAsk for review of a past chargeSeller and eligibility
Change a planMove to another entitlementEffective date and price
Delete an accountRemove account access and dataIrreversibility and store billing

A cancellation is not automatically a refund request. If you want money returned for a charge, follow the appropriate refund process as well. Eligibility depends on the seller, timing, location, and applicable terms; no article can guarantee approval for an individual case.

For direct web purchases and Google Play refund requests, OpenAI directs users to request a refund through OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account associated with the charge. Apple-billed refund requests go through Apple directly. OpenAI has a separate refund guide with platform-specific instructions and eligibility information.

Changing to another paid plan is also different from canceling all recurring billing. Review any downgrade or replacement plan’s price and effective date. Do not accept an offer automatically if your goal is to stop paying altogether.

If you cannot find the subscription or cancellation button

A missing control usually calls for an account and purchase-route check. Work through the evidence before repeating actions across several accounts. The following troubleshooting map keeps the investigation focused.

ProblemLikely checkUseful evidence

If you used Continue with Apple and a private relay email, use the same Apple sign-in route when locating the ChatGPT account. A normal email login can lead you somewhere else. Confirm the account identity before signing out of a session you may need for troubleshooting.

If you suspect duplicate subscriptions, inspect each platform’s records separately. Canceling a web subscription does not prove that a separate store subscription has also stopped. Compare charge dates and seller information instead of assuming all charges refer to one plan.

For an inaccessible account with direct billing, contact official OpenAI support and follow its verification process. Share only the information requested through that official route. Never send a full payment-card number, password, or one-time security code to a person who contacts you unexpectedly.

If a charge is genuinely unauthorized, contact the relevant platform and payment provider promptly. That is different from simply deciding you no longer want a subscription. Keep the records needed to explain the issue without posting private billing information on a public forum.

How to cancel when you cannot sign in

If your subscription is billed directly by ChatGPT and you can no longer access the account’s email address, OpenAI Support can cancel it without deleting your account. You do not need to recover the account first.

When contacting support, provide the email linked to your account or subscription, or the billing email when applicable. You must also provide any two of these billing details:

  • The last four digits of the payment card used for the subscription.
  • The card expiration date.
  • The billing address associated with the subscription.
  • The date of the most recent charge or charges.

Never send the complete card number.

For Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions you cannot access, cancel using the store account you used to subscribe. If you cannot access that store account, contact Apple or Google for account recovery. OpenAI cannot cancel store-billed subscriptions on your behalf.

What happens to your ChatGPT data after cancellation

Canceling a subscription does not delete your conversations, memories, or saved files. Your account remains active with Free-plan features and limits after the paid period ends. If you want to remove data, handle that separately:

A five-minute cancellation preparation checklist

You can prepare carefully before pressing a final cancellation button. This exercise is useful if you are unsure where the subscription began or if you want to avoid interrupting another person’s account. It does not require buying, deleting, or changing anything until you have the right record.

  1. Find the most recent subscription receipt.
  2. Write down the seller, purchase account, next billing date, and plan name in a private note.
  3. Open the matching subscription-management page.
  4. Compare the displayed plan and account with the receipt.
  5. Read what cancellation changes and when access ends.
  6. Cancel if that is your intended decision, then keep the final confirmation.

Afterward, set a reminder to inspect the next expected billing period. Compare any new charge with the date, seller, and subscription you canceled. Do not treat a payment notification from a different service as proof that this cancellation failed.

If you are still deciding whether to keep the plan, use a separate value check before renewal. The Plus decision guide offers a simple task log rather than a claim that everyone needs a paid plan. You can continue learning AI on available free tools after a subscription ends.

Questions beginners often ask

Does uninstalling ChatGPT cancel my subscription?

No. Uninstalling the app removes software from the device, not the recurring subscription. Cancel through ChatGPT billing, Apple, or Google Play according to the original purchase route.

Will I lose paid access immediately?

Cancellation ordinarily lets you use the paid plan until the current paid period ends. Check the displayed end date on the purchase platform. A refund or another account change can have separate terms.

Can I get a ChatGPT refund?

Canceling stops future renewals but does not automatically refund previous charges. For subscriptions purchased on chatgpt.com or through Google Play, request a refund through OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account associated with the charge. For Apple App Store purchases, request a refund directly from Apple. See OpenAI’s refund guide for eligibility details.

Does deleting my account stop every subscription?

Deleting your account cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT. It does not cancel a subscription billed through Apple. If you subscribed through Google Play, check your Google Play subscription and cancel it if still active. Always cancel store billing before deleting your account.

Can I keep using a free account afterward?

Ending a personal paid subscription does not require deleting the account. After paid access ends, available Free-plan features and limits apply. Your saved history is a separate data-management decision.

When to ask a person

Contact official billing support for inaccessible accounts, duplicate subscriptions, unexpected charges, or a cancellation status you cannot reconcile. Use your employer’s billing owner for workspace plans, and contact your payment provider promptly if you believe a charge was unauthorized.

Keep learning in small steps

Review whether Plus fits your routine if you are still deciding, or explore free AI tools for beginners after cancellation. Manage chat history separately when you have a clear reason to remove it. If you want the account gone as well as the charge stopped, deleting the account is a separate and permanent step — do it after cancelling, not instead of.

A final reminder

The right cancellation starts with the right purchase account and ends with a confirmation you can check.
